The CAMWS Latin Translation Contest: Fall 2026 Preparation

Each autumn, the Classical Association of the Middle West and South gives American Latin students a passage they have never seen and asks them to translate it. A committee of classics professors and Latin teachers reads the papers the way the AP Latin exam does, phrase by phrase. Emerson Latin takes part by special approval as an institution outside the United States, and our students have won awards in this contest every year since 2015. Graduates who won here have gone on to leading American universities and liberal arts colleges.

Students take part on Ioannes Magister’s recommendation, at two levels.

Intermediate: Small Group Class

Five classes, ten hours. The fifth class is the contest itself, taken on Zoom under the founder’s supervision. Every class is recorded and available to every student.

The Recorded Course. A student whose calendar cannot hold a Sunday evening may take the course entirely from the recordings, at a lower fee, and sit the contest live on November 29.

Advanced: Private Tutorial

In America, the Advanced paper is taken by students in their fourth and fifth year of Latin, at the level of AP Latin. At that level every reader’s mistakes are their own, so the preparation is one to one, and live.

Results

Results arrive in the spring as certificates issued in CAMWS’s name. The full record of past awards is on our Commendations page.
