Oxford Latin Program

Six Sessions of Systematic Mastery, Followed by Literature Intensive and AP Excellence

The Classical Method for the Serious Student

Since the Renaissance, the aristocratic academies of Europe have produced Latinate scholars before their sixteenth year. Not through modern compromises, but through systematic rigor that honored intellectual capacity.

The Oxford Latin program restores this tradition: 60 weeks of progressive mastery, followed by intensive literature study, culminating in AP Latin examination preparation that reflects genuine classical competence.

Program Structure
THE COMPLETE SEQUENCE

PHASE I

THE OXFORD LATIN FOUNDATION

60 Weeks

Six 10-week sessions, meeting once weekly

The Oxford Latin sequence follows the classical educational progression that has produced Europe's finest minds for centuries. Students master Latin grammar systematically and completely, engaging with progressively sophisticated readings that build from fundamental structures toward authentic Roman literature.

Trinity Session 2026

Classes begin April 11, 2026
Saturday, 9-11am KST

Present tense verbs; first, second, and third declensions. Introduction to Latin sentence structure and fundamental translation principles.

Summer Session 2026

Pronouns and additional verb tenses; fourth and fifth declensions, ablative usages, participial constructions. Progressive readings increasing in grammatical sophistication.

Fall Session 2026

Degrees of adjectives; comprehensive study of active and passive verbs. Continued advancement in translation competence through challenging passages.

Winter Session 2027

Subjunctive verb forms; various subjunctive usages including purpose, result, and indirect question; deponent verbs. Readings approaching the complexity of authentic texts.

Spring Session 2027

Ablative absolute; indirect statement; conditional clauses; cum clauses. Translation and analysis of authentic Roman literature begins—students now possess sufficient grammatical foundation to engage with original works.

Trinity Session 2027

Gerunds and gerundives; connecting relative; double dative. Sustained translation and analysis of authentic Roman literature. Oxford Latin sequence complete.

PHASE II

LATIN LITERATURE INTENSIVE

10 Weeks

Meeting twice weekly

Summer Session 2027

Having mastered the complete grammatical foundation, students now engage exclusively with advanced prose and poetry of authentic Roman authors.

Students learn to translate and analyze sophisticated Latin passages in preparation for the required readings that appear on the AP Latin examination. This is not superficial exposure but rigorous literary study—advanced close reading, sophisticated analysis of meter and rhetoric, exploration of historical context and literary devices.

This intensive prepares students not merely for examination success, but for genuine engagement with Latin literature as the Renaissance scholars experienced it.

PHASE III

AP LATIN MASTERY

Fall Session 2027 through Spring Session 2028

The AP Latin course builds upon complete grammatical mastery and summer literature intensive, focusing on:

  • Comprehensive review of examination texts

  • Translation strategies at examination pace

  • Short-answer and essay techniques refined through practice

  • Multiple-choice mastery using authentic AP materials

  • Sustained analytical writing on Latin literature

AP Latin Examination: May 2028

Students enter the examination hall with the confidence that comes from systematic preparation, not frantic cramming. The examination becomes confirmation of mastery, not test of survival.

International Contest Excellence Throughout

Emerson Latin registers, prepares, and monitors students for international competitions in Latin and classical humanities throughout the program, with students progressing from foundational to increasingly advanced competition levels.

THE PROGRESSION OF EXCELLENCE

Early Sessions

Students begin competing in foundational-level international contests, building confidence and experience while developing examination strategies.

Middle Sessions

As grammatical mastery deepens, students advance to intermediate competition levels, demonstrating progressive competence.

Advanced Sessions (AP Latin Coursework)

Students compete at advanced levels in multiple international contests throughout the academic year and summer—the most rigorous scholarly competitions where they face older, more experienced contestants.

Beyond AP

Some students continue their studies at Emerson Latin even after achieving perfect scores on the AP examination, competing at the highest levels alongside university students in the most demanding classical competitions.

THE EMERSON ADVANTAGE

Many elite boarding schools today no longer emphasize these contests. Those few that do rarely provide study materials or guidance—at most, they may reference entire textbooks for students to study independently.

Through years of teaching students from prestigious institutions during intensive winter, spring, and summer breaks, Emerson Latin's tutor has observed that even top-ranking schools often lack the systematic rigor necessary to prepare students adequately for these demanding competitions.

Emerson Latin's refined approach

Students train with real past examinations from years of competition history, using focused study guides that include only the essential information that will appear on these contests—nothing extraneous, nothing unnecessary.

This targeted preparation saves ambitious students dozens of hours while ensuring comprehensive mastery of precisely what examiners assess.

OUR TRACK RECORD

Students who earn at least three gold medals and achieve summa cum laude honors at advanced competition levels have consistently been admitted to Ivy League universities and top institutions worldwide.

Excellence recognizes excellence. Contest committees and university admissions alike distinguish genuine mastery from superficial exposure.

Why Students Across All Disciplines Master Latin at Emerson

For Pre-Medical Students

Medical terminology becomes transparent when you understand the Latin roots that comprise 90% of anatomical, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic vocabulary. The diagnostic reasoning required in medicine mirrors exactly the analytical precision developed through Latin translation.

For Pre-Law Students

Legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, and persuasive argumentation all build upon the logical foundations that Latin grammar provides. Every great legal mind from Blackstone to modern Supreme Court justices has been classically educated.

For STEM Students

The precision required for scientific and mathematical reasoning mirrors exactly the systematic logic of Latin grammar. Newton, Leibniz, Gauss, Darwin—all classically trained scholars who understood that Latin sharpens the mind for any intellectual pursuit.

Latin develops:

  • Analytical precision in parsing complex structures

  • Systematic thinking in applying rigorous rules

  • Pattern recognition across paradigms and constructions

  • Logical argumentation through translation and interpretation

  • Attention to detail where single letters change entire meanings

For Business and Finance Students

Strategic analysis, risk assessment, and complex decision-making require the disciplined analytical habits that Latin study cultivates. The rigorous mental frameworks developed through classical education have distinguished successful leaders from mere managers throughout history.
