The NLVE lists have always reported what a cohort can do collectively. What this year’s list reports, considered carefully, is something about the cohort itself. Most of the names here — Joonwoo Back, Edward Cha, Kate Choi, Riwon Hwang, Eunsuh Kim, Jackson Park, Phillip Yoo — are appearing in this record for the first time. The student who has been here longest, Gio Hyung, holds her Gold alongside students who are arriving at their first entry in a record that will continue. Nine of twelve earning Gold on an examination that tests Latin vocabulary and inflected forms cold, with no passage to consult, is a result that belongs to the instruction before it belongs to any individual. The instruction is holding at a new generation of students. Mentis praestantia. We congratulate all twelve.
