National Mythology Exam
2022 Results

24 June 2022

The National Mythology Exam is administered annually to more than six thousand students across approximately three hundred schools in the United States and abroad. Its subject is the inheritance every student of the classical tradition lives inside: the stories of Greece and Rome that shaped the literature, art, and language of the Western world and have not stopped shaping them since. The examination asks students to know that inheritance with some precision — not merely to recognize the names but to understand the narratives, the relationships, the meanings that have made these figures endure. Three Emerson Latin students answered every question correctly. The full record is set down below.

The National Mythology Exam covers a breadth of material that rewards genuine familiarity rather than targeted study. The stories of the Greek and Roman traditions are not a finite list to be memorized; they are a web of references, genealogies, transformations, and allusions that connect to one another in ways that only become visible after sustained reading. A student who has spent time with the primary texts — with Ovid, with Homer in translation, with the mythological dimensions of Vergil and Cicero — arrives at this examination already knowing most of what it asks. A student who has not cannot easily simulate that knowledge on the day.

A Perfect Paper requires that nothing in that web catch you unprepared. Every question answered correctly, across the full range of the exam, means that the mythology has been absorbed rather than surveyed. That three students at Emerson Latin achieved this in the same year, in a field of more than six thousand, is the kind of result one records without embellishment. The names are there. The distinction is clear. It needs nothing added to it.
