Admissions Common Doubts II of XI
Can’t my child just learn Latin from AI?
The short answer: AI can explain Latin and translate it. It cannot do your child’s reading for them, and reading is the whole point.
It is a fair question, and part of the answer is yes. A machine will explain a point of grammar patiently at any hour, and translate a Latin sentence in a second.
But a translation handed over by a machine teaches the student nothing, the way a machine lifting weights would make no one stronger. The value of Latin lies in the student doing the reading: holding the words in mind, testing what each one is doing, arriving at the meaning herself. Left alone with a tool that will do it for her, very few fourteen-year-olds choose the slow way.
So our classes put the reading where it cannot be outsourced: in the room, out loud. Students read at sight, translate passages they have never seen, defend their answers under questioning, and argue in seminar. The proof is spoken, live, in front of a teacher who knows them.
And as more of school becomes easy to fake, the things that cannot be faked, a proctored exam, a contest medal, a teacher who has known the student for years, are worth more, not less.
