June 16 – August 24, 2025
Courses meet weekly for a ten-week period.
For Beginners, Upper Elementary & Middle School Students
Prerequisites: None
Emerson students in upper elementary and middle school thrive with the Cambridge method, a program widely used in top high schools and boarding schools across the US and UK. Centered on reading Latin stories rich in Roman life, history, and culture, this approach helps students absorb the language naturally—80% through engaging narratives and 20% through targeted grammar support. After reaching the intermediate level, students can advance into our Grammar or Natural Latin programs for continued growth. Begin with Cambridge 1 in the summer, then complete the full program with three additional courses offered once a week during the fall, winter, and spring terms. This carefully paced progression builds confidence, reading skill, and long-term mastery of Latin.

Our Grammar Latin program is ideal for students who thrive with a structured, analytical approach. Using the time-honored grammar-translation method, we teach grammar deductively and reinforce it through authentic Latin sentences, translation exercises, oral drills, and composition. This rigorous 80-hour course—spread across weekly sessions from summer to spring—covers material typically taught over 150 hours in high school or college. Upon completion, students are eligible to join one of our many Latin Literature courses the following summer, prepare for our AP Latin curriculum, and stay on track to take the AP Latin Exam the next May. Designed for mastery, this program builds a solid foundation in Latin grammar and syntax while fostering appreciation for classical texts.

Prerequisites: None
Our Natural Latin program takes a fresh approach to language learning by prioritizing fluency, comprehension, and ease of expression over memorization and translation. Using the immersive nature method, students learn to think, speak, and write in Latin through stories, conversation, and context—just as they would in a modern language class. Grammar and vocabulary are acquired intuitively, promoting long-term retention and deeper understanding. After completing the yearlong course meeting once a week starting this summer and ending in spring, students are eligible to join our Latin Literature series, prepare for the AP Latin curriculum, and stay on track to take the AP Latin Exam the following May. This program is ideal for ambitious middle and high school students seeking a more natural, engaging, and enjoyable way to master Latin.

Latin Literature: Caesar
For Advanced, Middle & High school Students
Prerequisites: Successful completion of one of our Latin programs (Oxford, Grammar, Natural, ASAP, or Intensive) or an equivalent level of study
There is no figure more quintessentially Roman than Julius Caesar, the ambitious general who declared himself dictator for life. Long before his clash with Pompey and his assassination on the Ides of March, Caesar served as governor of Gaul—where he launched a series of bold campaigns against tribes like the Helvetians, the Nervii, and even crossed into Britain. These dramatic events are vividly recounted in his own words in the Commentarii de Bello Gallico, which students will read, translate, and discuss throughout the course. This class offers rich exposure to authentic Latin prose and is ideal for students seeking to strengthen their translation skills. It also serves as excellent preparation for those planning to join our AP Latin curriculum in the fall.

Latin Literature: Catullus
For Advanced, Middle & High School Students
Prerequisites: Successful completion of one of our Latin programs (Oxford, Grammar, Natural, ASAP, or Intensive) or an equivalent level of study
Few Roman poets have captured the intensity of love, heartbreak, jealousy, and desire as vividly as Catullus. His poetry—ranging from the tender to the scathing, the refined to the shockingly raw—offers an intimate glimpse into the passions and contradictions of a young man writing in the final decades of the Roman Republic. In this course, students will explore a generous selection of Catullus' poems, with a focus on his deeply personal and often volatile relationship with the mysterious “Lesbia.” Through reading, translating, and analyzing the original Latin texts, students will gain insight into the literary techniques, metrical artistry, and cultural context that make Catullus a central figure in Roman literature. This course also serves as excellent preparation for those planning to join our AP Latin curriculum in the fall.

Latin Literature: Medieval Bible
Advanced, Middle & High School
Prerequisites: Successful completion of one of our Latin programs (Oxford, Grammar, Natural, ASAP, or Intensive) or an equivalent level of study
What happens when we view a Gospel not just as sacred text, but as historical literature shaped by language, culture, and authorial intention? This course invites students to step into the world of early Christian Latin by reading the Vulgate version of the Gospel of Mark—an unadapted, vivid Latin narrative that offers both theological insight and linguistic accessibility for Latin learners. To enrich understanding, students will also examine parallel passages from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, fostering a comparative approach that highlights how three distinct voices convey similar events with different emphases and stylistic choices.
Throughout the course, students will translate and analyze selected pericopes (Gospel episodes) using tools from redaction criticism, gaining an appreciation for how Gospel authors shaped their messages. The course combines grammatical and historical guidance with a literary and textual approach, cultivating skills in close reading, theological interpretation, and critical thinking. This unique immersion into the Vulgate provides not only practice in reading Medieval Latin, but also a deepened understanding of one of the most foundational texts of Western civilization. This course also serves as excellent preparation for students who have already passed the AP Latin exam and are preparing for advanced-level international contests in Latin and Classical Humanities.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of one of our Latin programs (Oxford, Grammar, Natural, ASAP, or Intensive) along with two Latin Literature courses, or demonstration of an equivalent level of study
This intensive summer course prepares students for the revised 2025 AP Latin exam, focusing on the Pliny selections newly introduced by the College Board. Pliny is one of two required authors for the exam—the other being Vergil, covered in a separate course. Unlike most school-year programs that offer only partial coverage, we will read, translate, and analyze all required passages of Pliny’s letters to Emperor Trajan. Each class features real AP-style questions to build mastery in translation, analytical reading, and evidence-based writing. While Emerson students typically take AP Pliny in the fall to complete the full curriculum with extended exam prep, this summer option is ideal for boarding school students or early starters seeking a rigorous and complete foundation before the school year begins.
